How do I calculate hours worked?
Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 h 30 min; minus a 30-minute lunch that is 8 h, or 8.00 in decimal hours.
How many hours is 9 to 5?
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 h. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch you work 7 h 30 min, which is 7.50 hours a day and 37.50 hours over a 5-day week.
How do I calculate a night shift that ends the next day?
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift ends the next day: add 24 hours to the end. 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8 h 30 min; with a 30-minute meal break, 8 h.
Is a lunch break paid?
Under the federal FLSA, a bona fide meal period, ordinarily 30 minutes or more with you completely relieved from duty, is not work time. Short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes count as hours worked and are paid (29 CFR 785.18 and 785.19). If you must eat at your desk, you are working. Some states add their own break rules.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7 h 45 min is 7.75 hours. 20 minutes is 0.33, rounded to two decimals.
