How to fill in your time card

  1. For each day you worked, type the clock-in and clock-out times, like 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM, or 17:30.
  2. Type the unpaid lunch in minutes. Leave paid rest breaks out: they count as work.
  3. Add your hourly rate to see your pay, and pick California if you work there: it adds daily overtime.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my time card?

For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time and take off the unpaid lunch, then add the days. Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch, is 9 hours a day and 45 h a week: 40 hours regular and 5 h overtime. At $20 an hour that is $950.00.

How is overtime calculated under federal law?

The FLSA counts hours worked in the workweek: every hour over 40 is paid at least 1.5 times the regular rate. There is no federal daily overtime, so four 10-hour days are 40 regular hours.

How is overtime different in California?

California also pays daily overtime: 1.5× over 8 hours in a day and 2× over 12, plus the 7th consecutive day of the week. A 13-hour Monday and three 8-hour days at $20 an hour pay $800.00 in California, against $740.00 under the federal rule alone.

Should I include my lunch break on my time card?

Take off an unpaid meal break, usually 30 minutes or more, completely off duty. Do not take off short rest breaks of 5 to 20 minutes: under the FLSA they are hours worked and must be paid.
